Institutional Liquidity Index

What the Institutional Liquidity Index Measures

The Institutional Liquidity Index (ILI) measures how strongly institutional capital is supporting Bitcoin. It runs on a 0–100 scale: the higher the reading, the deeper the institutional bid; the lower the reading, the thinner it has become.

ILI tracks three channels of institutional capital:

  • Corporate treasury demand — whether public companies, with MicroStrategy as the bellwether, are still willing to buy BTC at a premium.

  • Net USD liquidity — whether dollar liquidity in the Federal Reserve system is expanding or contracting.

  • Spot ETF flows — how traditional capital is moving in and out of BTC through spot ETF products.

When all three channels are flush, ILI reads high. As institutional money recedes, the index falls with it.

Why We Built It

The bid structure of this cycle looks nothing like the last one. Price is no longer driven primarily by retail — it is driven by institutions. Whether a rally holds now depends on whether institutional capital keeps flowing in.

Karma Index, our existing cycle indicator, captures the retail side of that equation. The institutional side needed a lens of its own. The last two cycle highs — roughly 69K and 126K — were difficult to identify from on-chain metrics or futures data alone, because neither top was built on retail euphoria. Both were the product of large-capital buying power quietly running out.

That is the pattern every major top shares: price still printing new highs while institutional money is already walking away. ILI exists to catch that kind of unsupported rally, and to fill in the institutional view that the rest of the toolkit was missing.

How to Read It

The signal to watch is divergence. When BTC trades at a higher price than its previous peak but ILI prints lower than it did at that peak, price and institutional liquidity have decoupled. The rally continues, but the capital underwriting it is thinning out — which is exactly the condition that precedes a major high.

ILI grades this divergence into two tiers:

🟡 Yellow tag — BTC sets a rolling 30-day high while ILI diverges. Price has pushed higher, but institutional liquidity is visibly weaker than it was at the prior peak.

🔴 Red tag — BTC breaks its all-time high while ILI diverges and sits below 50. Price has cleared the previous top with institutional liquidity already running thin.
